NEW AGE MUSIC BY CATEGORY
The purpose of this posting is to help people find more of the music
they like. The music here is arranged more or less in categories with
similar music in each category. If you know you like one piece, you
might try others listed in the same category. The names of the
categories are somewhat arbitrarily made up by me and don't
necessarily reflect any proper use of any terms.
The information here comes from my collection of 400+ albums of New
Age music I've collected over the years. I don't consider myself a
connoisseur, I've just always liked electronic instrumental music and
have collected as much as I could over the years. This is my first
posting and it is quite incomplete as you can see it doesn't cover
anywhere near all 400+ albums I have.
Hopefully in a month or two I can post an updated version of this
list. I'll also see if I can run the list by an acquaintance I have
who really is a connoisseur of this music and has a collection even
bigger than mine. It would be nice to get a second opinion on the
music.
And it would be nice to get numerous responses to this list, as
everyone has different tastes, and everyone has their own opinion.
Perhaps some people out there can add some more albums to this list
that I don't have. Just keep in mind the purpose of this posting is to
help others find more of the music they like, rather than determine
what is good or bad music.
A separate posting will have albums arranged by musicians with
comments.
Conventions I use below:
colon
+-underbars-+ double quotes |
V V V V V
musician _album title_ (date) "track title" (track time) : comments
Example:
Ashra _New Age of Earth_ (1977) "Ocean of Tenderness" (21:50) : beautiful
[Note: The album date should be the date the album first came out.
Sometimes I can't find a date on the album and don't remember when it
first came out, or the date I find on the CD is the date of the CD
release and not the date of the original vinyl record release. I have
sold most of my vinyl records when they came out on CD, except when I
felt the vinyl record sounded better or significantly different than
the CD, since they usually remix the master for the CD.]

NEW AGE MUSIC TO TALK OVER
So named because of it's use as the theme music to open and close Guy
Guden's "Space Pirate Radio", a local show which airs Sunday night /
Monday morning from midnight to 6:00am, commercial free. Plays a lot
of New Age and imported music from around the world. Over the years
the show has used a number of the pieces below to start the show and
set the mood. About 10 minutes into the piece Guy will gently
introduce the show. The show ends the same way with one of the pieces
below, and again about 10 minutes into the piece Guy will gently close
the show by announcing what was played. Hence the music listed here is
quite new age, it moves, the piece holds together by itself as
something interesting to listen to, yet it doesn't have a complicated
plot which requires your full attention, and an announcer can talk
over it using it as background filler.
Klaus Schulze _...Live..._ (1980) "Sense" (31:10)
_Body Love_ "P:T:O:" (27:12), "Blanche" (11:14)
_Body Love Vol. 2_ "Moogetique" (13:15)
The Cosmic Jokers - (untitled, 1974) Side 1: "Galactic Joke" (22:38),
Side 2: "Cosmic Joy" (19:24) : A rare yet classic album
from 1974 featuring Klaus Schulze, Manuel Gottsching,
Dieter Dierks, Jurgen Dollase, and Harald GroBkopf.
Tangerine Dream _Zeit_ (1972) "Nebulous Dawn" (18:00)
_Green Desert_ (1973)
_Phaedra_ (1974) "Phaedra" (17:39)
Ashra _New Age of Earth_ (1977) "Nightdust" (21:50)
NEW AGE MUSIC NOT TO TALK OVER
Same as above, but a little louder or more active to be just
background music.
Klaus Schulze _Body Love Vol. 2_ "Nowhere - Now Here" (29:02)
_Timewind_ (1975)
_Moondawn_ (1976, with Harald GroBkopf)
_"X"_ (1978) : (Perhaps this goes in the louder category below)
Tangerine Dream _Rubycon_ (1975)
_Ricochet_ (1976)
Jean Michel Jarre _Oxygene_ (1976)
_Equinox_ (1978)
Tussilago Fanfara _Anna Sjalv Tredje_ : Rare yet classic
Kraftwerk _Autobahn_ (1974)
Michael Hoenig _Departure from the Northern Wasteland_ (1978)
Vangelis _China_ (1979) "Himalaya / Summit"
NEW AGE MUSIC LOUD AND ACTIVE
New Age like above, but here it really rocks. Loud and active like
Rock, but still definitely New Age, as it's all instrumental, the
movements tend to be lengthy, the music moves but stays in the same
theme for a long time.
Klaus Schulze _...Live..._ (1980) "Bellistique" (22:10)
_Dziekuje Poland Live '83_ (1983)
_Body Love_ "Stardancer"
_Body Love Vol. 2_ (1977) "Stardancer II"
Michael Nyman (untitled, 1982) "M-Work" (21:09)
Tangerine Dream -
_Pergamon_ (1980 live) : Even my non-new age music friends like this album.
One called it "Jazzy" which surprised me because I don't like Jazz.
The music does build to an exciting active finish, and sounds
somewhat like a symphony orchestra "pulling out all the stops".
_Force Majeure_ (1979) : (the TD Rock Album)
_Logos_ (1982 live)
Phillip Glass
_Koyaanisqatsi_ (1983 movie soundtrack) "The Grid"
_North Star_ (1976) - "Victor's Lament", "Ik-ook"
_Dance Nos. 1-5_ Track 2 (Dance 2)
_The Photographer_ (1983)
Steve Reich
_Music for 18 Musicians_
ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTAL WITH A PLOT
Close to New Age but with more of a plot. The music that flows
together with continuity, as if telling a story.
Thierry Fervant - everything
Gandalf - everything : Gandalf leans towards the quiet pleasant music
Constance Demby _Novus Magnificant_ (1986)
Jean Michel Jarre _Rendez-Vous_ (1986) side 1 : Very active
Robert Schroder _Harmonic Ascendant_ (1979) (produced by Klaus Schulze)
_Paradise_ (1983) : Tracks 1-5 make a continuous piece
22:40 long.
Sky _Sky_ (1980) "fifo" (17:05)
INSTRUMENTAL ROCK 'N ROLL
Who _Quadrophenia_ (1973)"Quadrophenia", "The Rock".
_Tommy_ (1977) "Overture", "Underture."
Jeff Beck _There and Back_ (1980)
Anthony Phillips _1984_ (1981) : Different from the other Anthony Phillips
albums I've heard.
Sky, "Toccata" (Their version of the famous Toccata from Johann Sebastian
Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor for Organ. On their
album _SKY_ (1980) and their album _CLASSIC SKY_ (1989) )
Gordon Giltrap (acoustic guitar and band, light rock)
_Visions_ (1976)
_Perelous Journey_ (1977)
_Fear of the Dark_ (1978)
_Live_ (1979)
Edgar Winter - (1973 single) -> "Frankenstein"
NOTES WITHOUT A TUNE
[a bunch of notes or sounds without anything holding them together.
"music" that I personally don't care for.]
Tangerine Dream _Electronic Meditation_ (or "Brain Damage" as I call it
since that's what it sounds like to me.)
_Alpha Centauri_
_Zeit_ (double)(except "Nebulous Dawn" which is New Age Music
to talk over.)
_Atem_ (except first 5 minutes)
Vangelis _Beauborg_
Michael Nyman _Decay Music_ (1975) Side 2 "Bell Set No. 1"
AMBIENT
Similar to 'New Age Music to Talk Over' above, but this would put the
audience to sleep. Background music that hangs around, very quiet,
barely no plot, but hangs together unlike 'notes without a tune'.
Meditative and/or music to go to sleep by.
Brian Eno and/or Harold Budd and/or Jon Hassell:
_Ambient 1/Music for Airports_ (1978)
_Ambient 2/The Plateaux of Mirror_ (1980)
_Apollo_ (1983)
_Lovely Thunder_ (1986)
_Thursday Afternoon_ (1985)
_The Pearl_ (1984)
Giles Reaves _Wunjo_ (1986) tracks 2 & 5
Steve Roach:
_Structures from Silence_ (1984)
_Quiet Music_ (1986)
Eberhard Schoener _Meditation_ (1973)
_Mountain Music_/_Sky Music_ (1984): albums available
separately or together on a double CD.
Kevin Braheney _The Way Home_ (1984) (originally titled _Perlanda_)
Suzanne Doucet _Om and Hum_ (1989): The classic that was never released. One
low base synth organ like chord held constant throughout the piece, with
small variations in the background barely perceptible, almost
subconscious. My non 'New Age Music' friends just stare at me blank and
say "I could have done that with one finger!". It's the small variations
in the background that hold it together. If you beg Suzanne Doucet she
might sell you a copy. "Only New Age Music", Suzanne Doucet, 8033 Sunset
Blvd. Suite 472, Los Angeles, CA 90046. Also try Suzanne Doucet's
_Reflecting Light_ (1987) album. Music that's always changing yet always
the same. An interesting paradox that she has superbly mastered.
SOFT SOOTHING MODERN INSTRUMENTAL
Vangelis _Opera Sauvage_ (1979) [Note not all Vangelis albums are similar]
_Chariots of Fire_ (1981 movie soundtrack)
_Antartica_
_La Fete Sauvage_ (1975) 2nd half of disk (flip side of record)
_Heaven and Hell_ (1975) 4 minute piece starting 12:49 into disk,
used in TV series Cosmos. (The rest of
of the album is very active, energetic).
Popol Vuh _Spirit of Peace_ (1985) : (I'd love to find this on CD)
Popol Vuh, the song "Bruder des schattens, Sohne des Lichts" ("Brothers of
darkness, Sons of light") used in the Werner Herzog film
"Nosferatu" [dracula]. On Popol Vuh album _The Best Soundtracks
From Werner Herzog Films_ (1982) and also on the Popol Vuh album
_Tantric Songs_ (1981).
Kitaro - everything
Tangerine Dream _Hyperboria_ (1983): Similar to Pinnacles.
Edger Froese
_Epsilon in Malaysian Pale_ (1975) : Early morning music with a
synth flute.
_Ages_ (1978 double album) "Tropic of Capricorn" (21:06) (Some Excellent
pieces on this album, but maybe hard to find.)
_Pinnacles_ (1983) : similar to Hyperboria
Christopher Franke _The London Concert_ (live) : This album sounds more like
Tangerine Dream than Tangerine Dream sounds like Tangerine Dream.
Don Slepian _Sonic Perfume_ (1987)
EXPERIMENTAL
[Stuff I can't describe yet]
Michael Nyman _Decay Music_ (1975) Side 1 "1-100" : Experimental, composed
mostly of piano notes which decay into silence.
Jon Hassell / Brian Eno _Fourth World vol. 1 Possible Musics_ (1980) :
Similar to their Ambient music but more experimental with dissonant
sounds.
Klaus Schulze _Audentity_ (1983)(double album, also available single CD
containing much but not all) : Actually quite good if you like Klaus
Schulze 'New Age Music Not To Talk Over' stuff. Some sounds like
soundtrack to eerie horror film.
Irman Schmidt & Bruno Spoerri _Toy Planet_ (copyright on CD says 1990 but I
know the vinyl record dates back much earlier than that.) : This
album, especially Track 2 "Toy Planet", deserves special mention,
except I can't describe it and I can't come up with a category to
put it in as I have no other music like it. I like to listen to it
and it seems very "New Age" but it's unlike any New Age category I
have above.
PIANO; SOFT SOOTHING
On to a new category of new Age Piano music, with or without
accompaniment.
Danny Wright
_Black and White II_ (1989) : Piano solo. The quietest piano music I have.
Very quiet, soothing, and beautiful.
George Winston
_Autumn_ (1980) : Piano solo. Everyone I've talked to agrees this is the
best of his seasons albums. Quite good.
_December_ (1982) : Piano solo. Not quite as good as _Autumn_ (my opinion).
Good at Christmas time as a welcome relief from traditional Christmas
songs. It does play some nice music of a Christmas time feel.
_Winter into Spring_ (1982) : Piano solo. I didn't care for (my opinion).
I stopped buying his albums after this one.
Yanni
_In My Time_ (1993) : Piano with accompanying synth strings. Soft and
soothing, unlike his previous albumns which are more active.
Rain
_The Moon in my Shoe_ (1989) : RAIN, P.O. Box 1238, Santa Barbara, CA 93102
More piano music if you're into it and can't get enough.
Jackson Berkey (Chip Davis and the Mannheim Steamroller)
_Fresh Aire Interludes_ (1981) A "best of" all the Fresh Aire quiet
interludes. Piano and accompanying strings. Sweet and quiet.
David Lanz
_Christofori's Dream_
_Return to the Heart_
Vangelis _China_ Track 2 "The Long March" (2:02) : Piano solo. Nice but short.
Tangerine Dream _Underwater Sunlight_ First 1:59 of track 2
Philip Glass _Glassworks_ (1982) "Opening", and "Closing".
Colin Towns _Full Circle_ (soundtrack to the movie "The Haunting of Julia")
Lovely haunting piano. Very rare album.
PIANO, LOUDER
Ferrante _Ferrante and the Phantom of the Opera_ (1989) : Loud banging away
at the piano giving yet another rendition of "The Phantom of the
Opera", plus some other "opera favorites".
Paul Lloyd Warner _The Spirit of Puget Sound_ (1989) : Solo Piano. Showoffy
display of piano skills. Paul Lloyd Warner, P.O. Box
1341, Santa Cruz, CA 95061. The Miracle of Dolphins,
CD 801, Published by MEVA PUBLISHING B M I.
Michael Nyman _The Piano_ (1993 movie soundtrack) : Piano and strings,
distinctively Michael Nyman, starts off in a minor key.

NEW AGE MUSIC BY COMPOSER
The music here is arranged by composer, since whenever I find an
album I like I tend to see what other albums there are by that same
composer. I attempt here to mention when all the composer's albums
sound similar, or to break them up into groups of similar sounding
albums.
Many albums deserve a lengthier
description than what I have given here. Take a look at the other
posting "NEW AGE MUSIC BY CATEGORY" for better descriptions of the
music.
Perhaps in a few months I can post an updated version of this list.
I'll also see if I can run the list by an aquantance I have who really
is a connoisseur of this music and has a collection even bigger than
mine. It would be nice to get a second opinion on the music.
And it would be nice to get numerous other opinions, agree or
disagree, as everyone has different tastes. Just keep in mind the end
purpose of this posting is to help others find more of the music they
like.
(You'll also note I haven't thoroughly alphabetized the list yet.)
ASHRA
[group 1]
_New Age of Earth_ : Some very beautiful pieces on this album.
[group 2]
_Belle Alliance_ : Much different from "New Age of Earth". More rock/jazz,
more a collection of short pieces.
(There are many other Ashra albums by Manuel Gottsching which I
never chose to buy after listening to them, although many of them
are quite good in their own way.)
JEFF BECK
_There and Back_ : The other Jeff Beck albums are a bit different and
I never cared to buy them.
PETER GABRIEL
_Birdy_ (movie soundtrack,1985) : all instrumental, no vocals, sort of like
his (oh great, the album appears to be untitled, 1982) album the
song "Wallflower". Painful music, in that you can feel the
emotional pain of the sufferer the composer tries to convey. The
album cover says "Warning: This album contains recycled material
and no lyrics." 5 of the 12 pieces are instrumental versions of
previously released material.
KEVIN BRAHENEY
_The Way Home_ (originally titled _Perlanda_)
_Galaxies_
(he has a third album which I never bought after listening to it.)
CONSTANCE DEMBY
_Sacred Space Music_ (1982)
_Constance Demby at Alaron_ - Live Concert Recording (1983)
_Novus Magnificant_ (1986) : [Note: Originally released on cassette, when
the first batch of CDs came out part 2 had been recorded
at the wrong speed, making it play back slower than it
should, giving it a sour sound. I brought this to their
attention and they corrected it with a new CD. The
correct playing time for part 2 as displayed by the CD
player is 27:14 even though the label on the CD and jacket
says 28:22]
_Light of this World_ (1987) : "Best of" album.
_Set Free_ (1989)
Only New Age Music:
[all from a group of related composers with a similar sound. "Only New Age
Music", Suzanne Doucet, 8033 Sunset Blvd. Suite 472, Los Angeles, CA 90046
SUZANNE DOUCET - _Reflecting Light_
SUZANNE DOUCET & CHRISTIAN BUEHNER - _Transmission_
CHRISTIAN BUEHNER & HELGE SCHROEDER - _Nightflight_
- _Visions from Atlantis_
CHRISTAAL -_Mystic Traveler_
AL GROMER KHAN - _Divan I Khas_
KARL SCHAFFNER & LOTHAR GRIMM - _Birds of Passage_
VARIOUS ARTISTS _The Voyage Beyond..._ (selected pieces from the above CDs)
ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC - _Heart of Life_
RAOUL DUGUAY, MICHEL ROBIDOUX - _nova_
ENYA
[Vocals without words. Actually they are English words, but it might as well
be a foreign language. Unlike songs, where the lyrics are the main part of
the music, the vocals here blend in with the music to create a very soothing
overall effect. There are several other Enya albums I don't have yet.]
Shepheard Moons (1991)
Watermark (1988)
THIERRY FERVANT
[Music that tells a story.]
_Univers_ (1980)
_Seasons of Life_ (Les Saisons de la Vie) (1981)
_Blue Planet_ (1984)
_Legends of Avalon_ (1988) : panpipe which sounds out of tune to me
towards end.
TANGERINE DREAM
[Founded 1967 by Edger Froese, named after a particular lyric in the
Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds". Over the years the most
common other members have been: Chris Franke, Peter Baumann, Johannes
Schmoelling, Paul Haslinger.]
- - -
[group 1: Brain Damage music]
Electronic Meditation (1970) : Froese, Klaus Schulze, Conrad Schnitzier.
(I call this album "Brain Damage" because
that's what it sounds like to me.)
Alpha Centauri (1971) : Froese, Franke, Steve Schroeder.
Zeit (1972, double album) : Froese, Franke, Baumann.
Atem (1973) : Froese, Franke, Baumann.
- - -
[group 2: Early New Age Classics]
Green Desert (1973) : Froese, Franke.
Phaedra (1974) : Froese, Franke, Baumann.
Rubycon (1975) : Froese, Franke, Baumann.

Encore (1977 live) : Froese, Franke, Baumann. Wanders aimlessly
Sorcerer (1977 movie soundtrack) :(can't find my copy of this album)
- - -
[group 4: attempt at vocals]
Cyclone (1978) : Froese, Franke, Klaus Krieger, Steve
Jolliffe [vocals]. Their first
attempt at introducing vocals, considered
a failure by most people I've talked with.
- - -
[group 5: music that rocks]
Force Majeure (1979) : Froese, Franke, Krieger. A cross between
"New Age Music" and "Instrumental Rock".
Tangram (1980) : Froese, Franke, Schmoelling.
Pergamon (1980 live) : Franke, Froese, Schmoelling. Even my non-
new age music friends like this album. One called it "Jazzy" which
surprised me because I don't like Jazz. The music does build to an
exciting active finish, and sounds somewhat like a symphony
orchestra "pulling out all the stops". Contains some hints of
Tangram.
Exit (1981) : Froese, Franke, Schmoelling.
White Eagle (1982) : Froese, Franke, Schmoelling.
Logos (1982 live) : Froese, Franke, Schmoelling.
Risky Business (1983 movie soundtrack)
Tracks: 2. The Dream is Always the Same (new)
3. No Future [get off the babysitter dream]
("Exit" track 4: Exit)
4. Guido the Killer Pimp
("Force Majeure" track 2: Cloudburst Flight)
5. Lana [first time making love with Lana]
("Force Majeure" track 1: Force Majeure,
remake or remix of since the intro is quite different)
7. The Pump [get that Porche started and back out of the
garage] (Jeff Beck: There & Back, track 4: The Pump)
11. Love on a Real Train (new)
[NOTE: The vinyl record has a much different mix of tracks 2 and 11.
The CD version both here and on the "Dream Sequence" CD is more
sparce sounding with less instruments.]
[group 6: quieter music]
Hyperboria (1983): Froese, Franke, Schmoelling. Similar to Pinnacles.
Poland (1984 live) : Froese, Franke, Schmoelling.
[group 5 cont.]
Underwater Sunlight (1986) Froese, Franke, Haslinger.
Tyger (1987) Froese, Franke, Haslinger. The lyrics well sung by female
vocalist Jocelyn Bernadette Smith are from poems by William Blake
(1757-1827) put to music by Tangerine Dream. Also a lot of
instrumental.
Livemiles (1988 live) Froese, Franke, Haslinger.
220 Volt (1993 live) (Edgar Froese, Jerome Froese) Now TD is just Edgar

TD SOLO ALBUMS:
EDGER FROESE
Aqua (1974) quiet water music
Epsilon in Malaysian Pale (1975) early morning music with a synth flute
Macula Transfer (1975-1976) May be hard to find. Mostly guitar.
Ages (1978 double album) Some Excellent pieces on this album,
but maybe hard to find.
Kamikaze 1989 (1982 movie soundtrack)
Thief (1981) There are two vinyl record versions of this. The variant
one leaves out "Beach Scene" and appends a new piece at
the end of the album after "Igneous".
Stuntman (1979)
Pinnacles (1983) : similar to Hyperboria
CHRISTOPHER FRANKE
[_Universal Soldier_ and _New Music for Films: vol. 1_ are similar as a
bunch of short pieces nothing special. _The London Concert_ is quite
good, and _Pacific Coast Highway_ is sort of a studio version of same,
but I and most everyone I've met like _The London Concert_ best.]
Universal Soldier (1992)
New Music for Films: vol. 1 (1993)
Pacific Coast Highway (1991)
The London Concert (1992 live) : This album sounds more like Tangerine
Dream than Tangerine Dream sounds like Tangerine Dream.
JOHANNES SCHMOELLING
[Both albums are similar]
Wuivend Reit (1987)
The Zoo of Tranquility (1988) : Similar to Wuivend Reit

Fresh Aire I (more symphonic as I remember)
Fresh Aire II (1977) : (II and III are similar. Quite good I think.)
Fresh Aire III (1979)
Fresh Aire IV (1981) : With this album I felt Mannheim Steamroller had lost
their magic touch and I never bought any more Fresh
Aire albums.
Interludes (1981) - A "best of" all their quiet interludes. Piano
and acompanying strings.
GANDOLF
[all Gandolf albums sound similar. If you like one you'll probably like
them all]
Journey to an Imaginary Land (1980)
To Another Horizon (1982)
Visions (1982)
Magic Theatre (1983)
Tales From a Long Forgotten Kingdom (1984)

In the Regions of Sunreturn (1979)
Prisms (1981)
Eclipse (1982)
Point of Impact (1983)
Images (1986)
PHILLIP GLASS
[I only have a small fraction of his albums, but I like his work.]
North Star (1976) - Tracks 2 (Victor's Lament), 9 (Ik-ook)
Dance Nos. 1-5 Track 2 (Dance 2)
Glassworks (1982)
The Photographer (1983) : Similar to Steve Reich _Music for 18 Musicians_
Koyaanisqatsi (1983 movie soundtrack)
Powaqqatsi (1988 movie soundtrack, sequel to Koyaanisqatsi)
Dance Nos. 1-5
GORDON GILTRAP
[These first 4 albums are good instrumental light rock]
Visions (1976)
Perelous Journey (1977) : _Perelous Journey_ and _Fear of the Dark_
Fear of the Dark (1978) : are my favorite.
Live (1979)
The Peacock Party (1979) : Here I felt he had lost his touch.
Elegy (1987) : More of a solo album without the band.
Gordon Giltrap + Portrait (1993) : Very bad, he tries to sing.
Use CD as frizbee.
MICHAEL HOENIG
Departure from the Northern Wasteland (1978) : (I personally quite like
this album enough to list it here all by itself even though
there's only one other album by Michael Hoenig that I know of,
and that one's now out of print. Not quite as good as I recall
which is why I passed up my chance to buy it.)
JEAN-MICHEL JARRE
[group 1]
Oxygene (1976)
Equinox (1978) : similar to "Oxygene"
[group 2]
Magnetic Fields (Les Chants Magnetiques) (1981) a bit faster pace.
Actually I hardly ever listen to this one not caring for it much.
The Concerts in China (Les Concerts en Chine, live, double, 1982)
[group 3]
Zoolook : Cross between Jean-Michel Jarre and Laurie Anderson's "Home
of the Brave" and "Mr. Heartbreak". No vocals but a few
words in various languages woven into the music.
[group 4]
Rendez-Vous (1986) : Very active. Think space shuttle mission 51-L.
Revolutions (1988) :
[group 5]
Waiting for Cousteau (1990) : Quite surprising is track 4 "Waiting for
Cousteau" (46:53) is very Ambient, like Brian Eno, quite unlike
any previous Jean Michel Jarre music (See the AMBIENT category).
[group 4 cont.]
Chronologie (1993) : Back to regular Jean Michel Jarre as in _Revolutions_.
KITARO
[all Kitaro albums sound similar. If you like one you'll probably like
them all. The earlier ones - _From the Full Moon Story_, _Ki_, have slightly
more environment sounds and percussion.]
From the Full Moon Story - More environments
Ki
Oasis
Silk Road (I & II)
Millenia : Exceptionally beautiful. Originally titled "Queen Millenia".
Actually the original title was in Japanese. Soundtrack
to Japanese annimated movie. A favorite of mine.

JEREMY LUBBOCK conducts LONDON NATIONAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

[tracks: Mirage, Flight, Aurora, Fire, Aqua, Spring of Youth,

LOS ANGELES SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA arranged and conducted by Jeremy Lubbock
Symphonic Suite "Queen Millenia" Orchestral E-Z listening music version

ROYAL SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA (Japanese Title)
[tracks: Straight away to Orion, Caravan, Dreams Like Yesterday,
Earth Born, Silk Road Theme, Noah's Ark, Return to Russia,
Never Let You Go, Moon-Star] Orchestral rehash of Kitaro stuff.
Nothing special in my opinion.
DAVID LANZ
[I only have the following 2 so far, both are similar quiet piano solo music]
Christofori's Dream (1988) : Has more of a theme as if telling a story.
Return to the Heart (1991) : More just a collection of nice pieces.
RAY LYNCH
[group 1]
_Sky of Mind_ (1983) : Very quiet. Much quieter than the rest.
[group 2]
_Deep Breakfast_ (1986) : Seems to be most people's favorite of his
_No Blue Thing_ (1989) : Similar to _Deep Breakfast_
_Nothing Above My Shoulders but the Evening_ (1993) : Starts off weak,
but recovers later.
NEURONIUM
Neuronium _Digital Dream_ (1980) : My favorite Neuronium album
_Chromium Echoes_ (1981)
_The Visitor_ (1981)
[These other Neuronium and Mychael Huygen albums just didn't have
that special something I like. Shorter pieces. Lost his touch?]
Vuelo Quimico

MYCHAEL NYMAN
[group 1]
(untitled, 1982) Tracks "Bird Anthem" (2:37), "In Re Don Givanni" (2:48),
"Initial Treat/Secondary Treat (4:29), "Waltz" (5:55), "Bird List
Song" (4:19), "M-Work" (21:09). [Piano Records 32 Alexander St
London W2 Distributed through Sheet Records.]
The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)
Drowning by Numbers (1988)
The Kiss and Other Movements (1985) Contains vocals. Somewhat like
Phillip Glass _The Photographer_ as there's a small story in it.
[group 2]
Decay Music (1975) : Experimental. Piano notes which decay into silence.
The Piano (1993 movie soundtrack) : Quiet piano music. Still
distinctively Michael Nyman style.
MIKE OLDFIELD
Tubular Bells (1973)
[NOTE: Two different CD versions of this exist. The CD I chose to keep
as being the slightly better recording has black letters on
a blue background for the label side of the CD. The other
CD I no longer have had traditional red letters on no background
(just the natural silver CD color). The timings for the
two CDs are slilghtly different. For the CD I kept they are:
CD player CD label & case Record Label
Track 1: 0:00 - 25:29 25.00 25.48
gap -0:04 - 0:00
Track 2: 0:00 - 23:17 23.50 23.26
Hergest Ridge (1974)
[NOTE: The vinyl record has a significantly different mix which is
fuller with more instruments, my preference. The CD mix is
sparser, with less instruments. I have never found a CD
containing the vinyl record mix, though I would like to.]
Ommadawn (1975) : Nice, quiet, easy flowing, like the beautiful parts
of _Hergest Ridge_ and _Tubular Bells_.
Platinum (1979) : A bit more pop and active than the earlier albums.
[NOTE: The CD I have replaced track 'Sally' with a different song:
The original song on the vinyl record has the words "Sally,
I'm just a gorilla. I'll say I love you evermore. Even an
ape from manilla, couldn't stop me knocking on your door."
The CD has instead a completely different song with the
words "Take my hand and we can softly go."
[NOTE: Part 4 of track 1 'North Star' is Mike Oldfield's version of
'Etoile Polaire (North Star)' by Philip Glass, album _North Star_.]
_Incantations_ (1978) : Hiawatha to music. Back to the soft nice music
as in _Ommadawn_. [The CD chops off about 3 minutes from the vinyl
double album at the beginning of track 3. Unfortunately they are
the best 3 minutes.]
_Q.E.2_ (1980) : Back to the shorter pop as in _Platinum_.
Exposed (1979 Live performance of Incantations and Tubular Bells.)
Real Rockin live ending to Tubular Bells Part 1.
_The Orchestral Tubular Bells_ perfromed by The Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra with Mike Oldfield on Guitar Conducted by David Bedford
1975. I didn't care for this orchestration.
_Tubular Bells II_ : I didn't care for this and never bought it. My
aquantance who's really in to this modern instrumental music says
this album was intended to be a parody, since the first album has
been so popular.
[There's many other Mike Oldfield albums which I never bought. I recall
they were more vocal oriented.]
STEVE REICH
Music for 18 Musicians (1978) : One continuous piece 56 minutes long.
The music is active, always changing, yet always the same.
Different Trains / Electric Counterpoint (1989) : "Electric Counterpoint"
is similar to _Music for 18 Musicians_.
The Desert Music (1985) : dissonent sounds I don't care for
STEVE ROACH
[They're both similar quiet music. He also has numerous other albums.]
Quiet Music
Structures from Silence
IRMAN SCHMIDT & BRUNO SPOERRI
_Toy Planet_ (copyright on CD says 1990 but I know vinyl record dates back
much earlier than that.) : This album, especially Track 2 "Toy
Planet", deserves special mention, except I can't describe it and
I can't come up with a category to put it in as I have no other
music like it.
EBERHARD SCHOENER
Meditation (1973)
Mountain Music/Sky Music (1984)
Trance-Formation (1977) : This album does not fall into the same meditation
quiet ambient music as the above 2.
ROBERT SCHRODER
[music that tells a story]
Harmonic Ascendant (1979) (produced by Klaus Schulze)
Paradise (1983) : Tracks 1-5 make a continuous piece 22:40 long.
[These albums are in a separate group from the above 2. I never cared
for these and never converted the record to CD.]
Brain Voyager (1985)
Computer Voice
Galaxie Cygnus-A (1982)
Floating Music (1980)
KLAUS SCHULZE
[group 1: New Age very active]

[These 4 Synergy albums sound similar]
Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra (1975)
Sequencer (1976)
Chords (1978)
Games (1979)
[I never found anything I particularly liked in these albums]
SCHWINGUNGEN
_New Age Music_ (double)
SOFTWARE _Electronic-Universe_
_Chip Meditation_
PETER MERGENER, MICHAEL WEISSER _Phancyful-Fire_
VANGELIS
[An exceptionally tallented composer, every album is uniquely different.]
[group 1: notes without a tune]
_Beauborg_ (I didn't care for this one at all and sold it. A bunch of
gong notes with no music holding it together as I remember.)
[group 2: Beautiful pleasant to listen to music]
_Antarctica_ : Very beutiful pleasant to listen to music
_Chariots of Fire_ (1981 movie soundtrack)
_Opera Sauvage_ (1979) : All 7 are beautiful tracks.
_La Fete Sauvage_ (1975 movie soundtrack) side 2. Side 1 is active.
_Ignacio_ (1977 movie soundtrack) first 21 minutes (side 1). The rest
(side 2) is somewhat like what I remember Beauborg being;
notes without a tune.
_Themes_ (1989) : A "best of" album including some previously unreleased
pieces. Most of the pieces are quite pleasant so I list it
here with the others.
_China_ (1979) : Has more of a New Age sound to it. In fact I listed
"Himalaya / Summit" under the 'New Age Music Not To Talk Over'
category, and "The Long March" under 'Quiet Piano Solos'.
[group 3: Here we get to the serious active music]
_Albedo 0.39_ (1975) : Parts used in TV series "Cosmos"
_Spiral_ (1977)
_Heaven and Hell_ (1975) : This album deserves special recognition as the
only album in my collection I can not play if I'm in an
irritated mood as it will heighten my irritation. It's also
the best album to play if I have a lot of energy to expell or
need to soak up a lot of energy. Very energetic moving music
you'll either love or hate. It also contains a 4 minute very
soft and beautiful piano piece (starting 12:49 into disk) used
in the TV series "Cosmos" (as the theme music I think),
followed by a nice 5 minute piece featuring vocals by Jon
Anderson who's done several albums together with Vangelis.
[group 4: These 4 albums seem to be similar although I haven't had time yet
to describe them or give them a category.]
_The City_ (1990)
_Direct_ (1988)
_Mask_ (1985) : (not related to the movie Mask)
_Soil Festivities_ (1984)
[group 5: Leftovers. Stuff not in a category yet.]
_Blade Runner_ by The New American Orchestra. (1982 remake of movie
soundtrack, since original soundtrack was never released,
although "End Titles" and "Love Theme" are now on _Themes_
album)
_1492 Conquest of Paradise_ (1992 movie soundtrack)
YANNI
[group 1]
_Keys to Imagination_ (1986)
_Out of Silence_ (1987)
_Niki Nana_ (1989)
[group 2]
_In My Time_ (1993) : Piano with accompanying strings. Unlike the other
three listed here which are active.
